The March of Dimes, March for Babies walk is on April 20,
2013. The March of Dimes is an important organization to our family
and we hope it is or will be for yours. We all have been affected by the
mission of the March of Dimes in one form or fashion. Here are just a few
things this amazing organization has advocated for and researched during its
history:
Eradicating Polio: Polio is now a thing of the
past thanks to the March of Dimes!
Folic Acid: The March Of Dimes conducted
extensive research on neural tube defects, now all pregnant women are encouraged
to take Folic Acid to reduce the risk significantly.
Apgar Score: Dr. Apgar was a vocal advocate for
babies as the March of Dimes Vice President of Medical Affairs in the 50’s and
60’s. Now all newborns are given this simple test to help doctors and
nurses determine the baby’s health.
Of course our family is especially thankful for March of
Dimes’ development of NICU facilities. Our triplets were born 9
weeks too early. As recently as the 1960’s, our children would have had a
less than 50% chance of survival, today it is over 90%. Born between
2lbs 10oz and 3lbs 3oz, Adelaide, Jackson and Carter were in wonderful hands
during their 6 week stay in the Harris NICU and are now healthy as ever!
It is with this information we ask for your help, to help
sponsor our team, in honor of all of healthy children, grandchildren, nieces,
nephews and even your own healthy birth!
